The mayor of Minami-Soma in Fukushima prefecture put out an SOS on YouTube on March 24. I visited the remains of the town last week and saw many people who have been sitting around with nothing but bad memories to keep them company. I spoke with a U.S. based volunteer named Camellia Nieh and she reached out to some people in Pendleton, Oregon. She asked them to direct the funds they raise towards Minami-Soma and they’re sister-cities.
Next, please watch this video from beginning to end. I’ve been collecting information on the tsunami affected areas and the last update I have for this town, Minami-Sanriku, was on March 31st to say they were still desperate for aid. You can take a look at the street view on Google Maps to see what the town used to look like, and then zoom out to see the latest satellite view. They have a twin-town in Italy called Besano.
If you’d like to see if one of the towns in Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Aomori or Ibaraki has a twin near you, please check this site. If you don’t have a sister-city or twin-town in the affected areas, you could adopt one anyway and give them the resources to implement local solutions to local problems.
